In July 2007, after amasing over 10,500 miles and spending thousands of dollars in modifications to my DRZ-434, I felt I had taken the bike as far as I wanted to go. That and I made the mistake of trying out my friend's 2006 KTM-525EXC. Shortly thereafter the DRZ went up on the auction block. I debated between purchasing a 525EXC or waiting for the 530EXC-R, but as the 530 photos began to be released I knew I wanted this machine to be my first KTM. A $500 deposit guaranteed me first spot on the waiting list... and wait I did- four long months. The wait was definitely worth it as this fine machine was a night and day improvement over my DRZ on almost all levels despite all of the modifications I had performed. Power out of the box was extremely strong and coupled with a light weight lead to rapid acceleration. Speaking of weight, although 40 or so pounds lighter on paper than the DRZ, it felt like a 100 pound difference due to the way the weight was carried. Suspension although firmer than the DRZ, gave a very good ride and has improved with break-in. Here is my history thus far with this excellent machine... October 2007: On the 30th, I took delivery of this fine machine. It ended up becoming my second KTM as I swapped out my Buell Ulysses for a KTM 990 Adventure. Total Mileage: 1 mi November 2007: Surgery and work prevented me from racking up many miles on the Pumpkin, however I did manage to get in some wheelie practice and developed a how-to write up for the valve adjustment as no service manual existed. Total Mileage: 187 mi December 2007: Finally some riding time on this orange rocket as I used it on a 300 mi Border Ride and numerous trips out to the desert. I quickly realized the performance advantage of this machine as I was easily able to conquer hills and obstacles that I would have sought alternative routes around while piloting the DRZ. January 2008: More desert riding and another 530 joined my riding group as my friend, icepick finally caved and bought one too. February 2008: This machine continues to impress as the suspension is broken in. Munn's Racing was able to find me a 13L tank to help increase my range.
