2008 KTM 530 EXC-R

Armor

Being a new model, armoring up the bike was no easy task. I wanted to armor the bike, but not add unnecessary weight.

Handguards were the first addition. As I had a set of the KTM poly guards that I had removed from my 990 Adventure, I figured I'd give them a try while awaiting a set of backordered Cycras. After a slew of rides and numerous drop tests, they have proven strong enough to leave on the bike permanently.

The next "burning" issue was adding an exhaust guard after my pipe torched a pair of like-new riding pants. I first added the Flatlands Racing guard, however I was not pleased with the way it interfaced with my KTM rubber backed frame guards. I ended up selling both and going with a much cleaner looking and lighter set of KTM frame guards which incorporated an exhaust guard.

I also installed a set of the KTM Carbon Fiber fork guards. These guards are very light and provide solid protection from rock hits on your upper fork tubes.

While splurging on Carbon Fiber I added the KTM Carbon Fiber header guard which is attractive and a featherweight.

Skid plates were on backorder, and in fact as I write this many still are. I'm still waiting for a KTM quick release poly resin plate, but purchased a Flatland's plate to use in the mean time. The Flatland's plate is functional and affordable, but a pain to take on and off for the frequent oil changes.
