The stock lighting on this bike was pitiful. I think holding a good flashlight would provide better output than the H4 bulb. Looking over the take off parts from my Ulysses, I decided to mount the following.. 4300K H7 HID kit, PIAA 1100X’s, and of course, the Garmin Zumo.
Easier said than done it seems. Luckily the KTM European headlight assembly uses a H7/H3 combo, so I ordered up one of those. I also added a Euro switch, with the goal of using it to activate the PIAA’s without having to add an extra switch. Review of the Euro Switch revealed that the standard wiring was set up for...
1. Lights off-Brake light when actuated only
2. Parking light/Tailight only-Brake light when actuated
3. Headlight (Hi/lo)/Tailight-Brake light when actuated
I really didn't see the point of having the parking light running only, so the way I set it up I didn't need to mount an aux switch. I had to swap two of the wires and then swap the taillight wiring under the fairing. I ended up with the following..
1. Lights off-Brake light when actuated only
2. Headlight(Hi/lo)/Tailight-Brake light when actuated
3. Headlight(Hi/lo)/Tailight and Aux lights-Brake light when actuated
With this setup I was able to shut off the HID when starting, preventing additional strain on the ballast. I also could shut off the light when moving creating a “ghost bike”
The HID was just as bright as it was on the Uly, and combined with the PIAA’s and the High beam literally turns night into day. With all of the lights lit it will throw 20 secs of light at 80mph, great for spotting things that go bump in the night.
Mounting the PIAA’s took a bit of thought, but I ended up mounting them on the Hepco Becker Crash bars. A little scrap of angle aluminum and longer bolts and the lights were securely mounted.
The Zumo was extremely easy to mount, thanks to the excellent Touratech mounts. Using these mounts I was able to mount the GPS in the optimal position right above my gauges. Figuring out where you are going only requires a downward glance and with an 8GB SD card, the Zumo can carry a weeks worth of riding tunes.
Finally, I added a set of Heated Grips. Since I’m fussy on grip selection, I ended up going with a set of the under grip, mylar style heaters, which allows me to easily change the grips. When mounting these make sure to put 3-4 layers of electrical tape between the aluminum bar and heater, otherwise your clutch side will be noticeably cooler than the throttle side. I mounted the Hi/Off/Lo switch in the middle of the instrument cluster right above the ABS light.
