Luggage

Had I known it would take so long to receive my Hepco Becker Gobi bags through KTM, I probably would have hung onto the Buell Luggage a bit longer. However after months of waiting I finally have my luggage.

It seems the Gobi bags are an area of contention.  Love them or Hate them it seems.  Having traveled with others using them, I constantly found myself envious of the gray cases.  Not to say the Gobi’s don’t have their flaws.  They are wide, especially when you consider what they hold.  The hinge can be defeated with a sharp knife.  And aesthetically they have the appeal of Tupperware.

I choose the Gobi’s over aluminum panniers for several reasons.  First the Gobi’s are tough.  The bulky dual wall construction disperses big hits well and if they do dent, then the dent can usually be removed by filling the bag liner with water and placing in the freezer.  I know you can pound aluminum back into shape, but it will never look the same or seal up right again. Second , the Gobis don’t turn your clothes black if you forget to use a liner.  Third, the Gobis are easily detached and make much better camp stools than the Journeys on my Buell did.  Finally, maybe it is a marketing gimmick, but as a Desert rider, the ability to carry 3 (actual capacity is approximately 3.6 L)of water in the walls of each bag is great.

Like most of my bike, my Gobi's are not stock. I had the lower 1/3 off the bag coated with Line-X by a local shop, at the recommendation of my friend, Cody. Not only does this add impact resistance, it also prevents you from wearing a hole in the bottom of the bag, if using them for camp stools. I also added a Touratech bottle holder to each bag, to allow me to carry a 1L fuel bottle, although now that I have a Aqualine 12 gallon tank, I'll likely be using the bottles for oil and coolant instead. When mounting the bottle mounts I made sure to drill outside the water jacket so I could use the bags for that purpose. Finally I added the KTM water taps, so I could have a water supply at the campsite.

KTM luggage racks were added for two reasons.  The first is the obvious one to carry luggage.  The second is to protect my expensive aftermarket pipes in the event of an “off”  Titanium is lightweight and beautiful, but dents extremely easy.

I also added the KTM Top case rack and Gobi top case, mainly at the request of my wife.  It seems the lack of a back rest on the Katoom, combined with rapid acceleration, causes the passenger to feel like they may be cast off at any minute.  After adding the case, no more such complaints.

Finally I added the Wolfman Expedition Rear bag and Small Tank Bag off my old DRZ.  The rear pack adds a large amount of storage for clothing, sleeping bags/pads, and other bulky items. The versatile tank bag is great for hauling tire tools, a camera, and a snack.  It works so well that I bought one to use on my KTM 530 EXC as well.
