Tires:
The stock Bridgestone Trailwings have gotten a really bad reputation - so bad in fact that some owners are swapping them out before even using them. This is unfortunate as the Trailwings are actually a decent street tire providing more pavement grip than the aggressive knobbies that most switch to. If you plan on riding on the street - with only mild off road usage, the Trailwings should be perfectly adequate.
Venture into the wild, however, and the Trailwings will quickly live up to their “Deathwing” nickname. Once you hit sand, mud, or deep gravel they will lack the necessary grip to keep the Dizzer travelling perpendicular to the ground.
For a more aggressive tire that still works on the street, I’d
recommend a set of Pirelli MT-21’s. Their rounded profile provides a smooth street ride with plenty of grip in the corners. They also work well off road providing solid hookup under most circumstances. They also return respectable mileage as I was able to average 3500-4000 miles from a front tire and 1500-2500 miles from a rear, my overly heavy throttle hand notwithstanding.
For those looking for more dirt performance, but wish to have a DOT
tire, a Pirelli Scorpion Pro front mated with a Kenda Trackmaster II rear seems to be the hot ticket. This combo rewards the Dr. Zook pilot with outstanding off road traction and will still tolerate occasional street use, just don’t go racing your Trailwing shod friend in the twisties. Wear on the front tire is accelerated slightly, but with mild street use you still can expect to get 2500-3000 miles from the front, while the rear will obtain 1500-2000 miles. One thing to note on the Trackmaster II rear is that pavement break in is critical, aggressive riding on hard surfaces within the first 100-150 miles will cause the tire to chunk badly - significantly reducing its service life.
