Text Box: History

The special one.  Another bike that I completely underestimated at the start.  When my friend bought this little child, I questioned his sanity.  Who buys a 50cc bike, aside from those with license restrictions across the pond?  My friend stated he was going to turn it into an electric bike and offered me the opportunity to put some wear on the engine.  So ride it I did.  My first impressions were that I could probably run faster.  But after my first ride the little Derbi had me in her trance.  So I borrowed it for a few weeks and put over a hundred miles on it, mainly by turning new housing developments into race tracks.  When my friend changed his mind on the electric project, I was already hooked and took her off his hands with only 372mi on the clock (approximately 125 of which were mine).

The thrill of having a bike that makes 8.5 horsepower and weights 204 pounds soaking wet is that to get anywhere with efficiency takes total rider skill and concentration.  Too much braking before the corner, and the world slows to a crawl.  Up shift at 8500RPM, shame on you, you should have waited until 9500RPM.  Now you get to sit at 7000RPM until you reach a downhill, or stab down at the shifter and try again.  Complete stop at the stop sign, man you really are a glutton for punishment.  Want a speed rush, find a steep hill, draft a semi and you may be able to push 60mph, which seems way faster than it is until cars pass you as if you are standing still.  Stoppies, and brake slides come with ease, thanks to its light weight.  Wheelies however require abuse of the clutch.
